Relay for Life is happening this year on April 1st to 2nd! This is an event that gives everyone a chance to celebrate cancer survivors and carers; remember loved ones lost to cancer; and fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work of the Cancer Society. This year, ACMA has formed a team of eleven intrepid doctors and dentists from a variety of locations, levels of training and specialities.
Members of the ACMA Relay for Life Team: Dr Joey Siu - ENT Registrar, Auckland Hospital (Team Captain) Dr Derek Luo - Gastroenterologist, Middlemore Hospital Dr Judy Huang - Gastroenterologist, Middlemore Hospital Dr Carlos Lam - General Practitioner/Urgent Care Physician, East Health Trust Dr Heidi Chan - Orthopaedics Registrar, Waikato Hospital Dr Peny Lin - Orthopaedics Registrar, Waikato Hospital Dr Edbert Wong - Medical Registrar, Auckland Hospital Dr Tim Ho - Urgent Care Registrar Dr Kevin Liu - House Officer, Middlemore Hospital Kent Yip - Dentist, Ormiston Dental Michael Zhuo - Dentist
Here is a quick overview of the event: We have formed team and set up a roster for the walk/run. Camps get set up at 12pm on Saturday 1 Apr. The Opening Lap is usually started by Cancer Survivors followed by everyone else at 4pm on Saturday. The Closing Ceremony is around 10 am on Sunday 2 Apr. For those of you who are interested but may not be able to make all the hours or have other plans, you can choose to do how ever many hours you want and then leave.
One thing to note, there must always be at least two people on the site. The track is usually a typical running track - around 400m and you run or walk the laps holding a baton until you feel too tired or wish to take a break after which you can hand the baton onto another person. There will be lots of festivities in and around the track with people dressed up in all sorts of clothes to support and motivate their team members. Teams have their own base to rest at and eat/drink which usually consists of a tent with a gazebo and some campchairs.
Please contact Joey Siu (joballrox@gmail.com) directly if you are interested or have any queries regarding this event.

For participating in this health check, you will get a summary of your measurements and some good health advice from our volunteer doctors and medical students. Please visit us in between your shopping and eating!
Here are some enlightening stories from our volunteer students about how they found the day and what it meant to them:
It was a really great experience that gave me my first real taste clinical work both using medical instruments and interacting with patients. We were lucky to have doctors there teaching us how to use manually take blood pressures as well as answer any questions we had. - Daisy Huang, 2nd year
From taking people's blood pressure all the way to discussing their health concerns, it was a really full on day. As a second year medical student, meeting and interacting with the public was an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding experience. Seeing them become enthusiastic and interested in their health also got me excited and so I'm sure to be back again for more! - David Kim, 2nd year
The YACMA volunteering was a great experience for me as it helped me a lot with getting more confident in performing tasks such as manual blood pressure and taking peak flow etc. It was also enjoyable and I had a lot of fun talking to the people involved as well as the patients during my time there. - Nicky Lee, 3rd year
The second volunteering event of 2017 took place at Botany Town Centre on the 4th of March. As part of Botany Community Day, Dr Derek Luo gave a speech to introduce ACMA/YACMA and our goals of health advocacy to the event goers. We were glad to see a great turnout of volunteers from all year levels. Apart from providing free check-ups including blood pressure measurement, peak flow, BMI calculation etc, the volunteers engaged in friendly conversations with members of the public to raise health awareness. During quiet periods, the volunteers kept busy by chatting about our experiences at different hospitals as well as practicing taking manual blood pressure on each other! - Cherry Chang, 5th year
