Dr Bernard Wong // MBChB, FRACP
Bernard is a general and interventional cardiologist at North Shore Hospital, where he also leads the Cardiology Research Unit. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Auckland, and trained within the Auckland Region. Originally from Hong Kong, Bernard is also fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese.
In 2021-2022, Bernard undertook a coronary intervention fellowship at the Prince of Wales in Hong Kong after being awarded the prestigious John Ormiston Fellowship from the New Zealand Heart Foundation. During that time, he gained experience in Complex and High-Risk Interventional Procedures (CHIP) and Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) under the tutelage of world-renowned CTO master Dr. Eugene Wu.
Bernard has subspecialty interest in ischaemic heart disease, in particular percutaneous management of coronary calcification where he is completing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Auckland. He also has an interest in coronary physiology, intravascular imaging, non-invasive imaging, cardiomyopathies, heart failure and preventative cardiology.
Dr Gary Lau // MBChB, FRACP
Gary is a general and cardiac imaging specialist. He holds a cardiology consultant role at Waitakere and North Shore Hospitals. He graduated from the University of Auckland in 2007, and gained Fellowship to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2015. He completed the Advanced Imaging Fellowship at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, Australia before returning to New Zealand in 2019.
Gary has sub-specialist interests in echocardiography; transthoracic, transoesophageal and stress echocardiography. His expertise covers most aspects of cardiology with interest in complex valve disease and coronary artery disease. He is also part of the heart failure team at North Shore Hospital, working closely with cardiac nurse specialists in managing patients with severe cardiomyopathy (heart failure).
Dr James Fu // MBChB, FRACP
James graduated from the University of Auckland in 1999 and trained as a cardiologist at Greenlane Cardiovascular Service which he became a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physician in 2012. James is currently a cardiologist at Waitemata District Health Board.
He has interest in general electrophysiology and general cardiology, particularly in heart failure management.
Dr Shawn Foo // MBChB, MRCP (UK). FRACP, GradDip Cardiac EP
Shawn is a consultant cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist at North Shore Hospital, Auckland. Shawn graduated from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom, undertaking postgraduate training in Manchester and the National Heart Centre in Singapore. He relocated to New Zealand in 2014, and has worked at North Shore, Auckland and Middlemore Hospitals. He completed his subspecialty cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Shawn is fluent in Mandarin.
Shawn’s cardiology subspecialty interest is in Cardiac Electrophysiology, he received his Graduate Diploma of Cardiac Electrophysiology in 2020. Shawn is currently pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) on cardiac implantable electronic device use, implant trends and outcomes in New Zealand.
Dr Yu-Min Lin // MBChB, FRACP
Dr Yu-Min Lin is a Consultant Geriatrician working at Middlemore Hospital since 2012. Originally from Taiwan, he moved to New Zealand in 1988 and graduated from the University of Otago. He trained within the Auckland region in both Geriatrics and Internal Medicine. He speaks fluent Mandarin.
Yu-Min has a particular interest in dementia. He is the lead Geriatrician working with the pilot “Memory Team” in developing a regional dementia pathway at Counties Manukau Health.
Another passion for him is to help the Chinese people of Auckland to increase their health awareness. Since 2013 he has been involved with sessions on World TV speaking on a variety of issues including cerebrovascular disease, dementia and osteoporosis.
