Mr Anand Segar // BHB & MBChB, PhD, FRACS (Orth) 

Mr Anand Segar is a New Zealand and internationally trained adult and paediatric spine surgeon whose practice is guided by the principles of patient-centered care. His approach is personable, balance, and individualised with a holistic view of spinal conditions. Anand will only recommend surgery when necessary and always through a shared-decision making process.

He completed his medical education at the University of Auckland, where he graduated at the top of his class. He subsequently trained in orthopaedic surgery in New Zealand and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford, U.K., examining the relationship of obesity and low back pain. He has received numerous awards for his research, serves as a Deputy Editor for the journal Clinical Spine Surgery, and is a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Auckland.

He has completed three prestigious, highly competitive, and world-renowned spine surgical fellowships in the United States working under the leaders in the field. This has provided him with a unique and comprehensive understanding of spinal problems afflicting patients of all age groups, from birth to the more venerable patients, in any aspect of their spine, all the way from their skull to their tailbone.

He sees patients privately at locations around the city and he holds a public appointment in adult and paediatric spine surgery at Auckland City Hospital and Starship Children’s Hospital.

Lily Lee

Author Lily Lee 何䔧䔧 was born in New Zealand in 1940, the first of four siblings born to a refugee mother from Chung Shan, Guangdong. She was commissioned by the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust to produce the book Farewell Guangdong - Refugee Wives and Children arrive in Aotearoa New Zealand, 1939-1941 (告别廣東 難民妻兒來到新西籣). It is fully illustrated with photos from Archives New Zealand and precious photos from the families. Lily and her team, with contributions from the families, have compiled this valuable historical record.

The journeys begin in the villages of Guangdong province and the families share the stories of life in the home villages, fleeing from war, passage by sea, safe arrival and then settlement. Archival and official records underpin the families’ stories. This significant group of wives and children, along with their sons and daughters subsequently born in New Zealand, faced the uncertainty of deportation for eight years before the Government approved their permanent residency in July 1947. Now reassured that they could remain with their husbands in locations throughout New Zealand, these families – the genesis of settler Chinese communities – were contributing to all facets of New Zealand life within a generation.

Dr Sharon Wong - Why do we need Meningococcal B prevention in NZ?

Dr Wong is a paediatrician at Waitemata District Health Board and a clinical senior lecturer at The University of Auckland, Department of Paediatrics: Child and Youth Health. She has an interest in infectious diseases and vaccines, and the health and wellbeing of Asian children and young people. She has been involved in research in these areas, completed a PhD and was involved with the New Zealand serogroup B meningococcal vaccine initiative which led to the national immunisation programme in 2004. Other areas of interest include clinical education and paediatric training.

Sharon Zollner - An Interview

Sharon Zollner is the Chief Economist at ANZ, a role held since 2017. She has also previously held roles with Westpac, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the Central Bank of Norway.

Our Autumn Social Event will be on April 3rd 2021, with at least two ACMA/YACMA teams competing in GeoGames’ outdoor murder-mystery adventure!!

This will be an outdoor escape game held across Auckland CBD, using their app to virtually solve the murder mystery of a new Ripper in town.

Dr James Wethasinghe (Respiratory Physician) - NZ Asthma Guidelines 2020 and COPD-X

Dr. James Wethasinghe (MBChB 2010, PGCertCPU 2015, FRACP sleep 2018, FRACP General Medicine 2020) is an Auckland trained Respiratory Specialist. Born in Sri-Lanka, he has had all of his formative education in New Zealand. He is dual trained in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and Acute General Medicine.

James is currently working as a Respiratory and General Physician in North Shore and Waitakere Hospitals, where he cares for a wide range of patients with General Medical and Respiratory diagnoses. He is actively involved in the development of the Waitemata District Health Board Sleep Service. His research interests are broad and he has published in the fields of: Sleep, Interstitial Lung Disease, Atypical Infection and Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria as well as Pleural Malignancy. Since 2018, James has been actively involved in formally teaching RACP candidates and is a honorary lecturer at the University of Auckland.

Born in Westport, Kai Luey graduated from university as an electrical engineer. With a career spanning over 30 years as a corporate executive and CEO of international public companies in New Zealand, Australia and Thailand, Kai has held many leadership positions in the Chinese community and his current positions are:

ACMA Walks the Mt Eden Boardwalk

ACMA welcomes members and family to the first social event of the 2020/21 calendar.

Mt Eden has been revamped, with a stunning new boardwalk, from the base to the summit.

Join us with family for a walk, at 10AM on Sunday 29 November 2020! Bring a picnic, or lunch at the café. ACMA will provide water and light refreshments.

We will meet at the new Mt Eden Visitor Experience Centre, an interactive experience that tells the story of Maungawhau / Mt Eden. The Centre explores the history of the region, including through the use of augmented reality.

This event is free for all ACMA and family members.

Christine Everest

BSc (Human Nutrition), PGDipDiet, BPhEd – University of Otago. New Zealand Registered Dietitian.

Life is my biggest teacher, but I am also a NZ Registered Dietitian. I work with GPs, practice nurses, specialists and other health professionals. I strongly believe in working as a multi-disciplinary team. Together, we can then provide the best possible patient-centred care. I have over 12 years’ experience working as a registered dietitian in the community, district health boards and in private practice.

My clinical experience working with a vast number of conditions has also given me insight into working with people from different backgrounds, lifestyles and health challenges. This privilege of people opening their doors and sharing their stories with me helps me better understand my clients and for them to know that they are not alone.  I translate complex clinical and dietetic knowledge into easy to understand language and help my clients gain clarity in their health journey.

Dr Tien Huey Lim

Dr Lim (MBChB, BHB, MD, FRACP) is a New Zealand trained gastroenterologist. Dr Lim is a Gastroenterology and General Medicine consultant at Middlemore Hospital, holding the position since 2013. She graduated from the University of Auckland with a MBChB in 2005. She completed advanced gastroenterology and hepatology training within the Auckland region, gaining FRACP status in 2013. She completed postgraduate doctoral research at the University of Auckland, completing a MD in the natural history of chronic hepatitis B. Having spent her early childhood in Malaysia, she is multilingual and can speak fluent Mandarin, and understand Cantonese, Teochew, Hokkien and Malay.

Areas of expertise:

• Endoscopy- diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy

• Bowel cancer screening

• Functional bowel disease, dyspepsia, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) inflammatory bowel disease

• Coeliac disease

• Liver disease: All liver disease, with particular subspecialist and research interest in Hepatitis B and fatty liver

Kelly Feng

Kelly Feng is the National Director for Asian Family Services since Oct 2016. She initiated the collaboration work with eCALD national program to develop the course of “how to work with Asian in Addiction” and launched at Cutting Edge Conference in 2018.

 Kelly also started first of kind Asian suicide advisory group and was a chair of the group to develop the Chinese and Korean Video resource and launched in 2018 & 2019. AFS had also been nominated for the Life Keeper Award in 2018.

 She was a qualified medical doctor in China and migrated to New Zealand in 2002 where she obtained her social work qualification. She has been a registered social worker since 2005 and has been working in mental health and addiction sectors and other social sector for over a decade.

Prior to joining AFS, Kelly led the pilot project for Asian Mental Health Services for the Waitemata District Health Board in 2007 and successfully set up the Asian Mental Health Services, over the past ten year has been involved in many Asian projects and consultations. She implemented an Asian clinical psychological service in 2013 and led the development of the Chinese and Korean ‘Incredible Year Parenting Training Programme’ that presented in many conferences. She also led in the design of the Asian Mental Health Consumer Survey methodology which aimed to increase the uptake of consumer participation in 2014. Moreover, Kelly involved many consumer lead projects in WDHB e.g the Real Time Feedback project.

 Kelly is passionate about the Asian community and its her heart to serve the community and continue to advocate for Asians in NZ to develop more culturally appropriate services to meet the need of our Asian community.

Kelly lives in Long Bay with her husband and three beautiful daughters and a boxer Diego, and she loves yoga and golf that recharge her own wellbeing.
